The Sixers’ Joel Embiid was sent off after picking up two technical errors against the Spurs

Just when you thought this Sixers season couldn’t get any weirder.

Joel Embiid was given two technical fouls in quick succession and sent off in the second quarter of the Sixers’ game against the Spurs on Monday night.

The game got off to a bit of a rocky start as the referees let Embiid and Victor Wembanyama get pretty physical at the post.

Then there was this really bizarre sequence with Wembanyama and Andre Drummond. Wembanyama drew a foul on Drummond during an out-of-bounds play by simply falling to the ground as the Sixers big man charged him. When it happened again, they issued a technical notice on Drummond.

Then things got weird.

After Wembanyama hit the ground (again), the officials gave Drummond another technical trick and threw him. When replayed it was clear that Wembanyama had simply stumbled and then embellished the contact. After a review, officials overturned Drummond’s ejection and gave Wembanyama a technical reason for the flop…or so we thought.

After Tyrese Maxey made the technical free throw, the refs basically said “Jk, no technical free throw!” and took the point off the board. I had never seen anything like it.

A few minutes later, Embiid picked up his third foul on a close call while attacking Wembanyama. Embiid lost his mind when official Jenna Schroeder hit the big man with two technicals, knocking him out.

Frankly, the team running the game lost control of the game early on and did a poor job of regaining it. Now the fans in attendance can’t see the former MVP they’ve wanted to see all season, and the NBA world can’t watch two of the game’s most tantalizing bigs compete.

But hey, at least the referees got some calls!
