The Sixers’ KJ Martin has found success in the two-man game with Tyrese Maxey

For KJ Martin, the most important thing is to make the right play.

That’s the 76ers’ power forward’s sole focus in a two-man game with Tyrese Maxey.

“My goal isn’t even to score a goal,” Martin said. “I just try to open it up. Whether it’s Tyrese or whoever is playing the ball, I just try to… create a good screen to give them shots. I just play him off.”

Despite his unselfish play, Martin still averaged 11.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 blocks and one steal in the final four games leading up to Friday’s contest against the Orlando Magic at Wells Fargo Center 25.2 minutes.

He scored a season-high 19 points on 7-for-8 shooting with three blocks to go in Saturday’s 111-96 road win over the Detroit Pistons. Due to injuries, Martin started the last two games. He had 11 points and two steals in Wednesday’s 106-102 home loss to the Magic.

“It was pretty decent,” Maxey said of the two-man game with Martin. “I thought he did a good job setting up screens and getting rolling. He knows how to put two on the ball and I can find him. I think what we need to do better now is… introduce it to him. He comes back and plays with me, now I can go downhill and pass the ball.”

Martin posted season averages of 5.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, 0.8 blocks and 18.2 minutes in Friday’s game.

Record on a daily basis

The Sixers’ 5-15 record entering Friday was the second-worst in the Eastern Conference, ahead of only the Washington Wizards’ 2-18 record. They were 1-3 in Friday’s games. The Sixers had a record of 2-1 in Sunday’s games. They are 0-2 on Monday, 1-1 on Tuesday, 7-0 on Wednesday and 1-1 on Saturday. The Sixers still have to play on a Thursday.
