The Sixers still plan to bid for the WNBA team despite the changed arena plans

The 76ers and Comcast still expect to make a bid for a Philadelphia-based WNBA team, a source familiar with the situation told The Inquirer on Sunday.

That the Sixers made such an offer was part of a PowerPoint presentation in late September about the proposed Center City arena, a sentiment reiterated by Mayor Cherelle L. Parker in a news conference that same evening.

“I know you’ve noticed that we don’t have a WNBA team here in the city of Philadelphia,” Parker said at the time. “Have any of you ever noticed that? You all know your mayor doesn’t like this.”

At the time, a Sixers spokesperson confirmed, “We share Mayor Parker’s desire to bring a WNBA franchise to Philadelphia and have been working with the league on this process.” Our goal is for our new arena to serve both the 76ers and the 76ers serves as the home of a WNBA franchise.”

A Comcast corporate spokesperson also issued a statement at the time: “Comcast Spectator has supported previous efforts to bring a WNBA team to Philadelphia, and we enthusiastically support any attempt to bring a franchise to our historic city.”

In recent months, the WNBA has announced expansion franchises in the Bay Area, Toronto and Portland. The Golden State Valkyries, affiliate of the NBA’s Warriors, will play their first season this summer.

On Sunday, the source said the plan to build a new arena in South Philly is a partnership between the Sixers and Comcast Spectacor, meaning the team will no longer be a tenant of the building. The Sixers organization has previously cited that designation as a reason for what they believe are issues with the team’s scheduling and resources at the Wells Fargo Center.

The source added that the Sixers and Comcast also plan to work together in new ways to “revitalize” the Market East neighborhood where the arena project has been proposed.
