JACKSON, Miss. – Just days after tornadoes struck parts of the South, the region is once again facing the threat of dangerous storms that could produce more hurricanes.

Multiple tornadoes ripped through parts of Texas and Louisiana on Thursday as a level 3 out of 5 severe weather threat remained in place. Most of the surprises occurred in and around the Houston metro. No injuries or significant damage were reported.

But forecasters have urged millions of people from Texas to the Carolinas and south to Florida to remain vigilant this weekend.

A Level 3 severe weather zone has been declared for Saturday, covering parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. A Level 2 zone stretches from Texas to Florida.

“Despite uncertainty about details, a broad warm sector with dew points in the mid-60s, a negatively sloping trough and a strengthening low jet will promote the possibility of a severe weather outbreak with multiple rounds of storms with all possible severe weather threats,” meteorologists at NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center wrote in their discussion on Thursday.

Large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes are expected with any severe storms developing late Saturday morning into Saturday night. Some strong tornadoes, i.e. EF-2 or higher, are also possible.

Danger of severe weather moves east on Sunday
