The Storm 5 Alert is in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday

Storm 5 Alert this afternoon through early Sunday

Forecast:

Today: Afternoon and evening storms | High: 68 | SSE 5-10

Tonight: Thunderstorms with heavy rain, a few storms strong to severe, windy | Low: 56 | S 15-25

Sunday: Mostly cloudy with T-storms early morning | High: 63 | WSW 5-15

In detail:

The storms will move into NewsChannel 5’s coverage area Saturday afternoon and continue into early Sunday. Some storms could be strong to severe, producing heavy rainfall that could lead to localized flooding – our primary concern.

The window for storms in our viewing area is 3:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

There is a small chance that some storms will produce strong winds. And although the chance of tornadoes is very low, it is not zero.

Most of NewsChannel 5’s coverage area is at a slight risk (1 out of 5) of severe weather, while a portion of southern middle Tennessee into northern Alabama is at a slight risk (2 out of 5) of severe storms.

While storms can bring strong winds – and the threat of a tornado is very low – the main concern with this system remains heavy rainfall, which could lead to localized flooding.

As we approach the remainder of the weekend, temperatures will remain unseasonably warm and the rain will ease.

We stay dry until New Year’s Eve with isolated showers returning. Much cooler air enters behind this system when highs fall into the 40s.
