The FOX Forecast Center said a Thanksgiving Day storm was expected to cause last-minute travel problems that would likely last through Black Friday and the start of the weekend.

A low pressure system is expected to move through parts of the Midwest and Ohio Valley into the Northeast on Thanksgiving. The worst weather is expected to occur north of the system, where the air will be cold enough to allow snow to break out.

The flakes could fly anywhere from Iowa to Maine, but the FOX Forecast Center expects the snow to be concentrated in areas of the interior Northeast.

The cold air will be limited initially as the storm system moves out of the Midwest, but as it continues to strengthen, icier air will be drawn further south.

The FOX Forecast Center said this could lead to decent amounts of snow blanketing parts of the Northeast, including upstate New York, the Green Mountains of Vermont, the White Mountains of New Hampshire and parts of Maine, such as winter storm on Thanksgiving Day slips offshore.

Travel on New York’s Interstate 81 and 90 corridors could be significantly impacted on Thanksgiving, with cities like Syracuse, Buffalo and Binghamton all affected by winter weather.

The snow there could last until Black Friday before finally leaving the region.

While winter weather can be expected further north, heavy rain and even storms are possible in the south.

The FOX Forecast Center said that south of the Thanksgiving winter storm, a line of storms could hit parts of the Tennessee Valley and the Southeast. Some severe weather is possible, with the strongest thunderstorms producing heavy rain and damaging winds.

People heading home are likely to experience significant delays in areas most affected by weather, and major airports such as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) are likely to experience flight delays and flight delays due to the storms -outages come through in the early hours of the morning.

However, heavy rain is likely closer to the center of the storm. This is expected to affect millions of travelers in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast as heavy rains are accompanied by strong winds along the busy Interstate 95 corridor.

This approaching winter storm is not expected to result in record snow amounts on Thanksgiving, but it could certainly boost the lake effect snow season in the Midwest and Great Lakes region.

The FOX Forecast Center said this is the time of year when the frequency of lake effect snow events increases. As this latest storm system moves out of the northeast, a blast of freezing air will spread across the region through the weekend and beyond.

This blast of cold air from Canada will cause temperatures to plummet, with many areas struggling to overcome temperatures in the mid 20s to mid 30s.

So, if this cold air is present, the pattern could favor significant lake-effect snow for areas downwind of Lake Michigan, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

On Monday, the FOX Forecast Center expects a generally west-northwest flow to be likely, which would favor areas east and southeast of the Great Lakes with the greatest potential for a lake-effect snow event.
