Poor travel conditions apply to eight states on Wednesday. This is expected to be one of the busiest holiday travel days leading up to Thanksgiving.

An updated forecast from AccuWeather shows expected weather impacts across the country as a record 71 million Americans will travel for the holidays, AAA reported.

The eight hardest hit states are Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.

AccuWeather predicts “significant travel disruptions are expected for tens of millions” of travelers.

The forecast calls for snowfall in mountainous regions in the western United States

AccuWeather senior on-air meteorologist Bernie Rayno said the outlet is tracking a storm moving ashore in Northern California that will bring rain and snow east two days later.

“There are many variables we are still analyzing with this storm, with track and intensity being key to where the rain and snow line will form and how much snow will fall in the Midwest and Northeast,” Rayno said.

After several feet of snow was dumped across the Sierra Nevada on Tuesday night, potentially causing road closures on Interstate 80 near Donner Pass, California, the same storm system is expected to sweep east. Snow will bring snow to a heavily traveled region of the Rocky Mountains and High Plains through Wednesday.

Although no major snowstorm is forecast for Denver, a few inches of snowfall could impact travel, particularly on Interstates 25, 70 and 80.

The storm is expected to bring 6 to 12 inches of snow across Utah’s Wasatch Range and Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, with local totals reaching up to 50 inches in some areas by late Wednesday.

The heavy snowfall in the mountains is good news for skiers planning to hit the slopes around Thanksgiving.

The storm will move over Texas and the lower elevations of the Southern Plains during the week.

• Before locking the car, check and pay particular attention to whether there are any children in the car.

• Choose an alternative route and consider leaving the car at home if you are traveling a short distance.
• Pay attention to all road users and respect everyone else by giving them enough space to keep them safe.
