The Tigers and Gleyber Torres are finalizing a one-year, $15 million deal, sources said

Free agent infielder Gleyber Torres is agreeing to a one-year, $15 million deal with the Detroit Tigers, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN.

Torres, 28, spent the first seven years of his career with the New York Yankees after being acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs in 2016. He has a career .774 OPS and plays both shortstop and second base for New York. He will also play second for Detroit after spending the last four seasons at that position for the Yankees.

Torres has good power for a center fielder, but saw a slight decline in his slugging percentage last season, hitting .378 above .450 after two straight seasons. He hit 49 home runs in 2022 and 2023 combined, but followed that up with a 15 home run season last year. He had a productive ALCS against the Cleveland Guardians – he hit .364 – and helped the Yankees advance to the World Series.

The deal could mean a position change for Colt Keith, who was the Tigers’ starting second baseman in 2024. Detroit is keeping its roster flexible as its interest base continues to enroll in the majors. They also signed pitcher Alex Cobb to a one-year, $15 million contract this offseason, as the team only has one major contract on its books beyond the 2025 season – shortstop Javier Baez.
