CLEMSON – Too many LaNorris sellers.

South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns and scored the go-ahead score with 1:08 left to lift No. 15 South Carolina to a 17-14 victory over No. 12 Clemson on Saturday afternoon in frigid Death Valley to help.

The Tigers appeared to be in control for most of the game, but failed to capitalize on several opportunities, allowing the Gamecocks to use a strong fourth quarter to take the win. Both teams are now 9-3 this season. Clemson is awaiting the outcome of the Syracuse-Miami game to see if an ACC Championship berth is still possible (Miami loses and Clemson faces SMU next week in Charlotte).

quarterback Cade Klubnik was 24-for-36 for 280 yards and Antonio Williams had eight catches for 99 yards. After the Gamecocks took the lead, Klubnik drove the Tigers to South Carolina’s 18, but his pass was deflected and intercepted, ending the game.

The teams played a scoreless first quarter with both defenses recording big stops. Clemson forced a fumble from Sellers on the Gamecocks’ first drive, and South Carolina held inside their own 20 on a 4th-and-1.

But the Tigers found something worthwhile early in the second quarter. Klubnik took control of his own 43 yards and hit Williams with a 40-yard pass to South Carolina’s 17 yards. Two plays later, Klubnik had a 13-yard touchdown run to take the lead 7-0.

The Gamecocks didn’t wait long for Sellers to do the damage. With just under ten minutes to play in the second quarter, he managed to escape the pocket and rush 25 yards to score the tying score.

The Tigers took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched right down the field to score. The Tigers mixed in the fast play with the quarterback run and quickly reached the Gamecocks’ 30-yard line. A 12-yard pass to Williams set up Klubnik’s 18-yard drive to the goal line, and the Tigers led 14-7.

The game then developed into a restless rhythm. Both offenses would make plays and put together drives, but both defenses would make plays when needed. Avieon Terrell stripped a South Carolina ball carrier to end a drive, the Tigers got nice and fumbled back to the Gamecocks, and Khalil Barnes ended another deep South Carolina collapse with an easy interception from Sellers.

The Gamecocks finally got back on the field with a 42-yard field goal from Alex Herrera midway through the fourth quarter. With 6:48 on the game clock, the Tigers led 14-10.

The Gamecocks attempted an onside kick and the Tigers emerged from the short scrum with the ball at their own 44-yard line. However, another three-pointer gave the ball back to the Gamecocks and Sellers took over the game. His 27-yard rush set up his 20-yard scramble for a touchdown, and the Gamecocks took their first lead of the game, 17-14, with 1:08 to play.
