The tornado risk increases for Houston Metro and East Texas this afternoon

12/26 10:40 a.m. – Numerous showers and thunderstorms are underway across Texoma, North Texas, the Brazos Valley and Southeast Texas. We are seeing an increase in storm intensity in southern North Texas, where a storm with hail is moving northeast toward Corsicana. By early afternoon, we expect the tornado threat to increase across portions of Southeast Texas, including the Houston metropolitan area, where the tornado threat has been increased.

The threat of severe storms, including tornadoes, is expected to expand into Far East Texas and the Golden Triangle by late afternoon. The risk of tornadoes in North Texas has decreased, but large hail, strong winds and heavy rain will continue to be a problem. Likewise, the tornado threat in Northeast Texas will remain at low levels today (not zero, but lower than Southeast Texas) as low levels remain somewhat cool. Between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. thunderstorms will move east from Texas.

A tornado warning is expected to be issued for Southeast Texas in the next few hours, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
