CURRENT SNOWFALL NUMBERS:

Due to the alignment of the winter storm system, the largest amounts of snowfall will now fall along I-70 through the metro. This means significant snowfall is expected from Atchison County to I-70 in the metro and as far south as Harrisonville.

The National Weather Service has said there is a 75 percent chance of snow accumulation of 8 inches or more in this heavy snowfall area. Our forecasts range from 9 to 13 inches and pockets of snow of 15 inches or more will be common around the I-70 corridor.

When does the ice turn into snow?

By 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. we should definitely see the transition to snowfall along I-70 and the subway. Snow showers range from thundershowers to heavy snow showers. Areas further south of this region will see snow later this morning or possibly remain in sleet or ice conditions for the remainder of the day.

Wind gusts of up to 40 mph are expected at 8 a.m. this morning and should continue until 3 p.m. After that, wind gusts will slowly decrease to 30 mph by 9 p.m

Snowstorm and Winter Storm Warnings:

Blizzard Warnings and Winter Storm Warnings are officially in effect until 3 a.m. Monday. The blizzard warnings extend north from Cameron, Chillicothe and Saint Joseph down to Johnson County and Jackson County along I-70 and the metro. At 2 a.m. this morning, Evergy reported that 3,000 customers – mostly south of the metro area – were without power due to the storm. We will continue to monitor and monitor power outages throughout the day, particularly as we pile up, heavy snow and strong winds occur across the area.

How long will this take?

The winter storm system itself should begin to move out of the viewing region this evening between 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. Exceptionally cold air is sucked in behind this low pressure system.

The minimum temperatures on Monday morning will be between -2° and 2° with temperatures between -10° and -14°. Maximum temperatures between 10° and 15° are expected in the afternoon. Fortunately, new information suggests the gusts will end by 3 a.m. Monday; However, winds will frequently blow at speeds of 5 to 15 mph for the remainder of Monday afternoon.
