The UConn Huskies’ star forward opted out against Baylor due to concussion protocol

The UConn Huskies will be without their best two-way player in a big game against the Baylor Bears on Wednesday night.

Junior forward Alex Karaban remains out with a concussion, CT Insider’s David Borges reports.

“For the second time this season and the first time against a truly talented national-level opponent, UConn will be without members of the last two title teams on Wednesday,” Borges said.

“Karaban, who is the team’s leading scorer with 15.9 points per game, will miss a second straight game due to a concussion.”

“Karaban, a redshirt junior and team captain, suffered a concussion near the end of the Huskies’ loss to Dayton in the early hours of Thanksgiving morning on Maui and was taken to a local hospital, but was able to make the flight home with the team. “

Dan Hurley discussed Karaban’s status on Tuesday.

“He woke up (Tuesday) fully wanting to practice and play,” Hurley said, according to Borges.

“But there are still some things left from (Monday). If we want to have a chance at winning this game, some people in college basketball need to step up. The Solo Balls, the Liam McNeeleys… These guys need to make their presence felt by playing at a high level.

Freshman Liam McNeeley also admitted Tuesday that UConn’s squad needs to step up without Karaban on the floor.

“Everyone has to put in the effort because Alex brings a lot on both sides of the ball,” McNeeley said, according to Borges.

“He’s the team captain for a reason.”
