The USA defeated Germany 10-4 and opened the preliminary round of the World Juniors

American goalkeeper Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich./Michigan State University) failed on a two-on-one chance by Nick Maul with 2:13 left to maintain Team USA’s two-goal lead after the first frame.

Trevor Connelly (Tustin, Calif./Providence College) extended the U.S. lead to just 1:38 in the second minute when he took advantage of a pass from Cole Eiserman (Newburyport, Mass./Boston University) gave Team USA a 3-0 lead.

Germany’s Julius Marsh scored on the power play at 5:00 and David Lewandowski equalized at midfield with 10:37 left to cut the U.S. lead to 3-2.

Hagens scored his second goal of the game at 14:01 when he fired a shot under Pertuch’s arm to give Team USA a 4-2 lead.

Brandon Svoboda (Level Green, Pennsylvania/Boston University) scored the decisive goal at 18:40 when he converted a rebound chance home with his backhand. Perreault fired a wrist shot into the net 59 seconds later to give Team USA a 6-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Carey Terrance (Akwesasne, NY/Erie Otters) found the net at 3:04 of the third period, capitalizing on a two-on-one chance with Svoboda to extend the U.S. lead to five.

Lenny Boos previously scored for Germany at 5:37 Brodie Ziemer (Hutchinson, Minn./University of Minnesota) scored two goals at 7:16 and 9:44 to put the game out of reach.

After Timo Ruckdaschel scored for Germany to make it 16:14, Eiserman scored the last US goal, making the final score 10:4.

Augustine made 18 saves for the USA in the win.

The U.S. Junior National Team will return to action in the preliminary round against Latvia on Saturday (December 28) at 3:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on NHL Network.

NOTES: Gabe Perreault, who had two goals and an assist along with seven shots on goal, was named the U.S. player of the game…The U.S. beat Germany 56-22…Team USA was 0-for-4 on the power play while Germany was 1-for-4.
