According to authorities, Mesa police arrested 27-year-old Charles Smith for allegedly spraying pesticides on produce at a Walmart in Mesa and filming it for a “reckless” social media post.

Smith went to the Walmart at Stapley Road and Baseline Road on Thursday night to film pranks.

A video showing a man spraying bug spray on yams, lemons, chicken and other produce was uploaded to Instagram and TikTok by a user named Wolfie Kahletti. The original video has since been deleted, but reposts are circulating online.

“Through investigative efforts and with the assistance of the Tempe Police Department, investigators were able to identify Smith as a suspect,” said Detective Richard Encinas, Mesa Police Public Information Officer. “Mesa police contacted Smith and he voluntarily turned himself in. During the interview, Smith admitted to stealing and spraying the pesticide.”

Smith was sentenced to prison for importing poison, criminal damage, endangerment and theft, the release said.

Both Walmart Media Relations and Mesa Police confirmed that management has been notified, the contaminated products have been removed and the affected areas are being cleaned and disinfected.

Kahletti, the user who originally posted the video of himself distributing the bug spray, later posted two videos with the captions “Fooled you,” “Throw ’em away,” and “Promise I threw ’em away.” uploaded their respective social media accounts.
