The Warriors’ Curry, sprained thumb and all, knocks down 8 of 8 3s

SAN FRANCISCO — To add some joy and juice to the Golden State Warriors, Stephen Curry celebrated his first 3-point basket Thursday night by jumping and putting his arms in the air as if he had just thrown a touchdown.

As Curry drilled his final triple of the night, he jogged back to the Warriors’ bench early in the fourth quarter with his mouth open and his arms waving up and down. In his storied shooting career, the Warriors superstar had his most accurate night from behind the arc when he shot 8 of 8 from three and had 30 points, 10 assists and six rebounds to lead the Warriors to a 139-105 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers at Chase Center.

Wednesday’s performance was Curry’s highest 3-pointer without a miss in his career and just tied the NBA record for most three-pointers without a miss in a game, according to ESPN Research. Curry also becomes the first player in NBA history to go 8-on-8 behind the arc and record 10 assists in the same game.

“He deserves those nights,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “Everything he does and endures for us. It’s so much fun to see him do that. And our fans and our coaches, we’re all spoiled to see him play night after night.”

“But we have to cherish these nights. He won’t be around forever and he’s one of the most beautiful basketball players that ever lived and we’re lucky to watch him.”

And Curry did all of this with a sprained right thumb on his shooting hand. Curry was listed as questionable on the injury report and he said his status was uncertain. He practiced the day before but tried to protect his shooting thumb.

“He barely practiced yesterday,” teammate Draymond Green said. “I kind of walked around and practiced doing everything with my left hand. … Seeing him come out and have the game he had kind of sums up Steph.”

The Warriors desperately needed such an easy win. Entering the evening, Golden State had lost 13 of 17 games after a 12-3 start.

They have released their best games since November. Seven Warriors scored in double figures. They shot 60.9% from the field, including 22 of 39 from distance. The ball also moved everywhere on the court as Golden State had 43 assists on its 53 goals.

The Warriors ended a 22-game streak in which they failed to hit 50% of their shots from the field. That’s why Curry said he wanted to celebrate his first three-pointer that opened the game to get his teammates going.

“Sometimes when you have a little injury or something unusual, it forces you to focus a little bit,” Curry said. “And just be free. (I was) I’m just glad I got to play. I was a little unsure at the start of the day. I didn’t get a lot of tries in the first half but all four were really good shots in rhythm and from then on you just ooze joy that things went the way they did and that Dennis had a day (Schroeder) Three goals in the first half, JK (Jonathan Kuminga) came in and hit some big shots, Moses (Moody)everyone just felt the rhythm of the night.

Curry even took a 3 off the glass and responded like he couldn’t believe it went in.

His last two 3-pointers came on consecutive shots. The first was a 31-foot pull-up and the last of the night was a 28-foot pull-up that gave the Warriors a 116-86 lead with 9:12 left.

When Curry was near the bench, he was having fun, holding his duct-taped right thumb and staring at his hot hand.

There have been too many nights over the last month that ended in frustration, leading Curry to assess that the Warriors’ play was “mediocre” after Monday’s 113-95 home loss to Cleveland. But Golden State (17-16) has won two of its last three games.

“I know what I said last game and I meant it,” Curry said of the team’s average play. “Because you are what your record says you are, and we have been playing subpar basketball for a long time. Of course I take responsibility for a lot of it and at the end of the day you just want to play freely and have fun.”

“I celebrated my first three-pointer and just tried to bring some joy into the game. That’s why we have to try to maintain, even if the shots aren’t falling for a certain period of a game, we just keep at it.”br/)
