The weather on the East Coast will become warmer and wetter as a rain shower approaches

ARLINGTON, Va. − Out of the freezer and into the soup.

Large parts of the East Coast, which suffered teeth-chattering temperatures in one of the coldest starts to December in recent years, were in for a reprieve starting Sunday and continuing through midweek. But this warm-up comes at a price: foggy, wet weather and, in some cases, complete drenching.

“This storm could bring torrential rain to portions of the Atlantic coast on Wednesday and Wednesday night,” AccuWeather senior long-range meteorologist Joe Lundberg said in an online forecast.

The weather pattern that will impact the East Coast will begin with snow spreading across the mountains to the west, which could cause travel delays in the Denver area, according to Accuweather on Monday. Parts of this weather system will strengthen near the central Gulf Coast and reach the east, where wet, sloppy weather will prevail – and there is even a risk of flooding.

Finally a break from the arctic blast

Across much of the East, cool temperatures will ease into the first half of the week on Sunday. Washington, D.C. had an expected high of 62 on Sunday and 60 on both Tuesday and Wednesday. New York City and Philadelphia were expected to reach the mid-50s on Sunday and the low 60s on Wednesday.

The warm front is in sharp contrast to late last week, when an arctic surge swept across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, bringing snow squalls, whiteouts and strong wind gusts, leaving 20 million Americans facing winter weather warnings or warnings.

Even parts of Florida weren’t immune last week. Freeze warnings were issued as far south as Ocala, and freeze warnings stretched from Daytona Beach on the east coast to Homosassa Springs on the west coast. From an “annoying” rain to a downpour

The first wave of moisture aimed at the East will mostly be a “troublesome” shower on Monday, Weather.com said, although there could be some snow in places like northern New England. Tuesday could start the day with fog and haze before the heaviest rain begins along the I-95 corridor on Wednesday, causing travel problems in places with heavy fog, forecasters warned.

Rain could turn to wet snow as temperatures drop by Wednesday night, but severe cold is not expected. “A strong blast of cold air will not accompany or follow this storm, but just enough cold air to bring some wet snow to part of the region,” Lundberg said.

Risk of flooding is possible

Heavy rain falling on already saturated ground — along with snowmelt from warmer temperatures — could lead to flooding in some areas, Weather.com said. Local flooding from Long Island to New England is possible, forecasters said.

Concerns about wildfires are resurfacing in the East

The wet weather could also dampen the fire threat in some areas on the East Coast. Arlington, Virginia, and other Washington, D.C. suburbs were on alert Sunday for new wildfire threats. “There is an increased risk of wildfire spread due to dry conditions caused by a lack of rain,” the National Weather Service warned.
