The white Christmas card predicts which parts of the USA will get snow

With just five days until Christmas, weather forecasters now have a pretty good idea of who will wake up under a blanket of snow on the big day.

With a few exceptions, it looks like what you see on the ground today is what you’ll see on Christmas morning, although a final streak of snow is possible across parts of the Northeast just before the holidays, AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon said Buckingham told USA TODAY on Thursday.

Overall, a white Christmas is now guaranteed across much of the West’s mountainous terrain, including the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains, according to AccuWeather.

Where else can you expect a white Christmas?

In addition to the mountains of the West, a white Christmas also looks promising in some areas of the East:

“Things are looking up for the few cities around the Great Lakes that were buried under several feet of lake-effect snow this month, including Erie, Pennsylvania, which saw its snowiest start to winter on record,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Lada.

There’s also a good chance of a white Christmas from North Dakota and northern Minnesota to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and parts of northern New England, according to Weather.com.

White Christmas possible at the last minute

There will be another storm early next week that could bring some last-minute Christmas snow, forecasters said.

“A weak storm is expected to move rapidly eastward from the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley during the day on December 24th and then move through the central Appalachians, the Mid-Atlantic and New England from the evening hours of December 24th into the early hours of Christmas.” said AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Pastelok in an online forecast.

“This storm will bring mostly rain, but may also bring some mixed frozen precipitation, particularly over the northern Plains and central Appalachians, where a wedge of cold air is most likely to remain,” he said.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland is offering some hope for snow, possibly even on Christmas morning, in its forecast Monday through Wednesday of next week: “A mix of rain and snow is expected, with the best potential for snow each night through the following mid-morning hours.” .”

Not surprisingly, the Austin/San Antonio weather service wryly said in a forecast released Thursday: “There is currently a good chance of isolated thunderstorms on Christmas Eve. So if you want a white Christmas, you’ll probably have to wait until next year.”

Accuweather has released maps and a forecast showing its predictions for where a white Christmas is most likely to occur on December 25, 2024.

What is a white Christmas?

It doesn’t have to snow on December 25 to meet the Weather Service’s definition of a white Christmas: there just needs to be at least an inch of snow on the ground. Even a hint of snow doesn’t count, Weather.com reported.

On average, about 38% of the Lower 48 will have an inch of snow on the ground on Christmas Day, according to 21 years of data compiled by NOAA.

Since 2003, those percentages have fluctuated wildly from year to year, from just 17.6% last year to a whopping 63% of the contiguous U.S. in 2009, Weather.com said.

Why do we care about a white Christmas?

America’s fascination with white Christmas dates back to at least 1942, when Bing Crosby sang the wistful song in the film “Holiday Inn.” Written by Irving Berlin, the song’s lyrics convey a romanticized image of Christmases past, “just like the ones I used to know.”
