Olympian Ilona Maher and her partner Alan Bersten took second place as they were fan favorites throughout the competition as Maher continued to develop as a dancer. Danny Amendola and Witney Carson took fifth place, followed by Stephen Nedoroscik and Rylee Arnold in fourth place and Chandler Kinney and Brandon Armstrong in third place.

But before the winners were announced, the dancers had to compete one last time and compete in two rounds of dancing. First, under the guidance of one of the three judges, they performed a redemption dance based on one of their routines from earlier in the season. Then each of them was given the opportunity to perform a freestyle dance, demonstrating their special skills that may lie outside the general boundaries of ballroom style.

There was a lot more dancing, including an opening number to Madonna’s “Holiday” performed by the DWTS troupe featuring performances from all of the season’s couples as well as a special segment that brought co-hosts Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro back to the dance floor. Other performances included a Mandy Moore-choreographed number to Troye Sivan’s “Rush” by the Professional Tour Dancers and best of all: an Argentine tango by former pros Mark Ballas and Derek Hough to Tango Bardo’s “Libertango.”

In line with DWTS In keeping with tradition, Season 32 champion Xochitl Gomez returned to dance in Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” with her pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy.

But let’s get to the competition.

Rylee Arnold and Stephen Nedoroscik.

ABC

Olympic bronze medalist Stephen and his partner Rylee opened the show (after 30 minutes of recap, boooh) with a quickstep, a make-up for their number on Soul Train night. They danced to the Rembrandts’ “I’ll Be There For You,” also known as “I’ll Be There For You.” Friends Theme song (a title that should have gone to Chandler or Joey). Stephen has struggled with his timing all season, but never more so than in Quickstep. But the judges earned high praise for his redemption dance, saying it was his best performance yet. With a total of 29 points for the exercise, the pair achieved a near perfect score.

For their freestyle dance, Stephen brought along other members of his gymnastics team to demonstrate his incredible strength and gymnastic skills (and of course his pommel horse was on display). This number gave the pair their first perfect score of the season and increased their total points total to 59 points.

Jenna Johnson and Joey Graziadei.

ABC

Next were Bachelor alum Joey and Jenna with a cathartic cha-cha that Derek hoped would give Joey a chance to become more precise with his footwork. Derek praised the duo for the level of difficulty of their performance, while Bruno Tonioli told them that they danced like two professionals. They posted their first perfect score of 30 of the night, keeping them in the tight fight for the Mirrorball trophy.

For Joey’s freestyle dance, he returned to his roots as a tennis pro and teacher and emphasized the sport throughout his routine, even using a tennis racket as a prop. While Carrie Ann Inaba found the number a bit disappointing, Bruno and Derek praised the originality. Ultimately they achieved a score of 29, which is a score of 59.

Witney Carson and Danny Amendola.

ABC

Former NFL players Danny and Witney were given a redemption tango by Derek, bringing all the time back to the first week of the competition. It posed a particular challenge for the duo as Danny and Witney’s strength lies in their lifts and there are no lifts in tango. Carrie Ann praised Danny for showing the biggest transformation of all the men competing this year. Nevertheless, they achieved the lowest score so far and only received a 27 from the jury.

Danny and Witney paid tribute for their freestyle Barbie, with Amendola dressing up as Ryan Gosling’s Ken. “You turned football Ken into dancing Ken,” he said to Witney. Derek called the routine “one of the most entertaining things I’ve ever seen on this show.” They scored a 29 for the number, bringing their final score to 56.

Ilona Maher and Alan Bersten.

ABC

There was no question Olympian Ilona and her partner Alan would give it another go after their previous Jive performance at Hair Metal night ended with Ilona in tears. The duo received praise for adding a lot more “fun” to this dance and declaring it a true dance of salvation. Ilona and Alan tied with Danny and Witney with an initial score of 27.

Ilona dedicated her routine to all the girls who were inspired by her on the show, especially those who were told they were too tall or too muscular. She walked through a dressing room and reminisced about her time on the show before her tracksuit was ripped off and the heat hit the ballroom (the performance featured several costume changes). Ilona and Alan were the second two of the evening to achieve their first perfect score of the competition, taking their final score to 57.

Chandler Kinney and Brandon Armstrong.

ABC

Chandler and Brandon have been at the top of the leaderboard all season, but there were still some dances that needed redemption – Carrie Ann chose the Jive, which they originally danced on Hair Metal night. While Carrie Ann noted that Chandler had the toughest season of all the contestants, their jive earned praise across the board, earning them another perfect score of 30.

ABC

Chandler and Brandon celebrated being the first black couple to make it to the finals with a freestyle dance dedicated to the black dancers who have paved the way through history, including the Nicholas Brothers, the Stars of disco and the pioneers of hip-hop and breakdance. Carrie Ann acknowledged the historical significance and impact of their dance and praised them for using their platform in this way. They received an additional 30 points, making them the only couple to achieve a perfect score in both final dances, with a total of 60 points.
