Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Masked Singer Season 12, Episode 12, “Finale: Champion Is Crowned.”

The Masked Singer Season 12’s holiday-themed finale on Wednesday night was all tinsel-covered news.

First up was season five winner Piglet (aka Nick Lachey), who decided to kick off the season with an upbeat rendition of Andy Williams’ “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” Although he sang against a beautifully festive backdrop, it wasn’t The Masked Singer Without some truly disturbing backup dancers dressed as faceless mints or nightmare-inducing yetis to complete the set, and in that sense the show did not disappoint.

As a result, panelist Rita Ora, who had to miss the semi-finals due to illness, also returned. While Lachey performed on stage, Ora and fellow panelists Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg and Robin Thicke, as well as ever-shirtless host Nick Cannon, gathered around one Masked singer-Themed Christmas tree to exchange gifts and happy wishes (and of course get Jeong to put the star on the top).

However, it wasn’t just the committee that received gifts. The audience was treated to two performances each by the finalists Buffalo and Wasp. Both contestants had the opportunity to sing a slower song and another high-energy hit, ensuring everyone played to their strengths.

To that end, Wasp performed “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars and “I’m Your Baby Tonight” by Whitney Houston, and Buffalo sang “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye, giving the final performance of the season with ” “Too Good at Goodbyes” by Sam Smith.

Throughout each performance, we were reminded of the immortal words of Elizabeth Banks’ character Pitch perfect: “Nothing makes a woman feel like a girl more than a man who sings like a boy.” Or in this case, three of them.

Thicke seemed to understand this when he once told Buffalo, “Man, all the ladies here are in such a good mood now, you know,” which caused Jeong to laugh happily.

Jokes aside, it was also a surprisingly emotional evening for everyone. Both contestants cried throughout the episode and shared in their clue packages and on stage what doing the show meant to them and how surprised they were by the experience. The panelists also had a touching moment when Thicke pointed out that his mother, Gloria Loring, was in the crowd. Ora then called over her husband, Oscar winner Taika Waititi, who was also sitting in the audience. This prompted McCarthy-Wahlberg to draw attention to her son Evan, who was working on the crew that season. When it was all said and done, this group of cast family members even got together for a sweet photo op.

In the end, someone had to win the Golden Mask Trophy, and according to Cannon, the final result was unsurprisingly “very, very, very close,” but ultimately Buffalo was crowned the Season 12 winner. With the win, the trio was made official Masked singer History, because never before has a group or duo won the show.

After the praise was given for Buffalo, it was time for the final unmasking. Traditionally, Wasp had taken first place as runners-up. This year, the panelists won’t be added to the Naughty Santa list because of their bad guesses. Although McCarthy-Wahlberg and Jeong were both wrong and guessed Jason Derulo and Usher, respectively, Ora and Thicke both guessed correctly that Wasp was two-time Grammy-nominated R&B singer and actor Mario.

But it was the final guesses of the evening that certainly gave the jury more than money in their stockings. For once, the group was unanimous in their choice of Buffalo, and ultimately everyone agreed that it included none other than four-time Grammy winners and R&B legends Boyz II Men (consisting of Shawn Stockman, Wanya Morris and Nathan Morris). Leading The Wild were vest-style masks.

And so another year and another crazy season comes to an end The Masked Singer. The show returns in the new year, with season 13 starting on February 12.
