WEATHER HEADLINES

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The winter storm begins with widespread and at times heavy snowfall.

This snowfall will transition to a wintry mix or freezing rain early afternoon near I-64 south toward the Kentucky Parkways. Road conditions will deteriorate quickly today.

Wintry and freezing rain will continue near I-64 this evening. Our current forecast is for over 1/2 inch of ice accumulation and 6 to 8 inches of snow for the Louisville Metro. Travel will be extremely difficult tonight. Stay home if you can!

As the system moves eastward Monday, the remaining wintry mix will become all snow. Travel will remain difficult, if not impossible, into Monday. Depending on the extent of the icing, power outages may also occur.

Persistent snowfall and severe weather will ease Monday evening. The bigger story will then become ongoing travel issues and bitterly cold temperatures. Lows will reach the teens Tuesday morning.

The most intense cold air is expected Tuesday into Thursday this week, with high temperatures struggling to climb above the teens. Overnight lows will certainly fall into the single digits Tuesday night into Thursday night.

Areas experiencing significant amounts of snow and ice due to our current winter storm could well fall below zero. We are also keeping an eye on another storm system that could bring more severe winter weather to the region through Friday, which is also now a WAVE Weather ALERT DAY.
