The winter storm is bringing snow and ice to Texas later this week

Another winter storm is heading toward Texas, and this one could bring more danger than Winter Storm Blair.

The second major winter storm of 2025 is expected to have more southern impact before turning northeast, AccuWeather warns. Cities like Dallas, Nashville and Atlanta are at risk of snow and ice in the coming days.

Unlike the polar vortex that brought Arctic air down from Canada, this storm is expected to form over Texas Tuesday night into Thursday. There are also areas of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain.

“Exactly how quickly the storm comes together, tracks and gains strength will determine the extent of snow and ice that extends from the I-20 and I-40 corridors from Texas and Oklahoma to Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi “, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia from the end of this week into this weekend,” AccuWeather said in its Monday afternoon update.

Temperatures in North and Central Texas will remain low throughout the week, the National Weather Service reports. Highs will be in the mid 30s near the Red River and upper 30s/40s elsewhere. Morning wind chills will reach into the teens Tuesday and Wednesday, then warm up to around 10 degrees Thursday morning.

Dallas could see historic snowfall in the upcoming winter storm

This week’s snowstorm “could bring more than a year’s worth of snow to Dallas,” AccuWeather reports. The meteorologist says the historic average annual snowfall in the city, including sleet, is 1.6 inches.

“The upcoming storm is expected to bring at least two to three times that amount within hours Wednesday night into Thursday night,” AccuWeather meteorologist Emma Belsher said.

According to AccuWeather forecasts, Dallas has a 54% chance of 3 to 6 inches of snow and a 42% chance of 0.5 to 3 inches of snow between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Friday. It could be the biggest snowstorm the metro has seen since February 2010.

Belshar warns that even smaller amounts of snow and ice can create dangerous conditions below freezing.

Due to unusually low temperatures in Texas this week, ice poses additional dangers in this storm. Conditions will be particularly precarious in the northeastern portions of the state on Wednesday evening and Thursday. Travel is dangerous and the extra weight on trees and power lines could cause power outages.
