The work week begins with mild gray skies in Utah on Monday

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Monday, Utah! The working week begins with relatively mild but somewhat gloomy weather. Today’s daily high temperatures will be similar to yesterday’s temperatures, northern Utah will peak in the 40s while southern Utah will warm into the 50s.

The end result? Gray skies are expected today, with light showers in the north Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Southern Utah will have a mix of sun and clouds, but thicker clouds will move into northern Utah as the afternoon progresses, creating cloudy skies. The northernmost portions of the state will experience light valley rain and mountain snow Monday night through Tuesday morning, primarily along the northern Wasatch Front, Cache Valley and Wasatch Mountains.

The valleys could see rain changing to snow Tuesday morning, but this is unlikely to stick to most surfaces. This will be short and easy, so even the mountains will appear only a few inches tall, perhaps a little more for mountains near the Utah-Idaho state line. Valleys should dry out by Tuesday morning, but persistent moisture could lead to isolated drizzle and thunderstorms in higher areas to the north.

From Tuesday evening, high pressure will build up again, which will calm the situation for a while. The downside of the settling weather is the settling of valley inversions and the associated smoggy haze. Poor air quality and haze are expected in the northern valleys through Thursday. The reversal will languish until another system comes through, which may not be until next week.
