The article contains major spoilers about the ending of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 The authors address the question of whether a backup plan was in place if Jim Carrey did not return as Robotnik. The third installment revealed that the franchise antagonist survived and remained under the radar until the titular protagonist asked him for help in finding Shadow. Even against this background, Robotnik’s return came as a surprise Carrey was considering retiring in 2022which makes his involvement questionable. The star eventually returned to the dual role of Robotnik and his grandfather Gerard Robotnik. The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 The cast also includes Idris Elba, Ben Schwartz, Keanu Reeves, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter and Krysten Ritter.

In an exclusive interview with ScreenRantWriters Josh Miller and Pat Casey talked about their plans if Carrey didn’t return for the sequel. According to Miller, Paramount sent a message early on that they were confident Carrey would return for the third film. The team did that I was aware of a script that was good enough to entice the actor to returnwhich had to be very different from what he had done before. Check out her full quotes below:

Müller: No, I mean, that’s above our pay grade. We don’t know exactly what the producers or Paramount did or didn’t know, but we were told early on that they were confident they could get Jim back.

Casey: But with the caveat that we make it attractive for him. So we definitely wanted to come up with something really good that wouldn’t be repeated, because Jim doesn’t want to repeat himself. We had to give him something fresh to play with, give him two characters, and also really send Ivo on this emotional journey, with a little bit of a redemption arc by teaming up Ivo with Sonic. We wanted to make it so attractive to Jim that there was no way he could say no when he saw it.

Müller: What I think is the coolest thing about Jim is that I feel like when you look at other franchises, it usually feels like the star gets a little lazier. You get to the point where you say, “Technically, I’m only in 10 minutes of this movie, but you can string it together so that it still feels like I’m an important character.” I have that Feeling that Jim always wants to be challenged. The fact that he had done makeup for both characters in three films now meant that he had to do a lot more than he did in the first two films.

Casey: God bless him.

What this means for Sonic The Hedgehog 3

Jim Carrey could have been left out of the third film

Sonic the Hedgehog 2The ending of ‘s gave Carrey an easy way out of not returning for another episode. In the second film, the Azure Hedgehog faced off against Robotnik’s Giant Eggman Robot. If the machine breaks down, Robotnik seemingly falls to his death along with his creation. This would have given Carrey an easy way to exit the threequel if he had no interest in the script. This likely increased the pressure on Casey and Miller to write a truly engaging script. Luckily, the writers’ hard work paid off and Robotnik has returned.
