The New York Yankees lost out on the Juan Soto sweepstakes earlier this offseason when Soto signed a $765 million contract with the New York Mets. Since then, the Bronx Bombers have switched to a Soto backup plan.

That plan called for signing Paul Goldschmidt and Max Fried while also trading for Cody Bellinger and Devin Williams.

Rucker Haringey recently predicted that the Yankees would sign top free agent closer Tanner Scott to complete a perfect backup plan for Soto this offseason. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Scott is expected to sign a $54 million contract.

“The Yankees bullpen still needs to add a left-handed hitter who can get hitters out in high-leverage situations,” Haringey wrote. “The organization is interested in bringing Tim Hill back to the roster, but that shouldn’t stop them from looking for the best southpaw available in free agency.”

“Tanner Scott is that guy. The struggles he’s endured with control over the years have limited his effectiveness, but he made the All-Star team for the first time in 2024. He has a plus fastball and a sharp slider that allow him to come.” That versatility will increase his price in free agency and his appeal to the Yankees.

Scott would be a great addition to the Yankees bullpen. It would result in a one-two finish at the end of the games, shortening the games in the Bronx. Scott and Williams would give the Yankees a left-hander and a right-hander to close out games.

If general manager Brian Cashman can fill the gap at third base in an affordable way, spending big on Scott would be a good way to improve the roster.
