The Yankees expect to acquire the Brewers superstar in an $8 million deal in a surprise blockbuster

The Milwaukee Brewers’ road to a World Series title is long and winding.

Although the Brewers have been excellent over the last decade, they haven’t performed like a typical World Series contender. They traded away many of their superstars before losing them to free agency, with Josh Hader and Corbin Burnes being the most prominent recent examples.

This winter is all about the potential move of two-time All-Star closer Devin Williams. The 30-year-old right-hander has a ridiculous 1.83 ERA in 235 1/3 career innings and struck out 375 batters, thanks in large part to his devastating “Airbender” changeup.

After the Brewers declined Williams’ $10.5 million club option for 2025, notions grew that the right-hander could move this winter, with next season being his last before free agency.

On Wednesday, MLB Network’s Mark DeRosa predicted that the Brewers would send Williams to the New York Yankees in a blockbuster trade before Opening Day.

“Devin Williams, pack your things,” DeRosa said. “We’re not staying in Milwaukee. Herself and I think Luke Weaver will be in that Yankee bullpen throwing absolute ball. Devin Williams to the Yankees makes a lot of sense to me.”

New York is known for getting the most out of its veteran relief pitchers under pitching coach Matt Blake. They’ve successfully breathed new life into countless pitchers like the aforementioned Weaver, but it’s been a while since they’ve had a game-changer like Williams.

The Yankees could do a lot of damage with Williams, but what’s in it for Milwaukee? It’s unlikely they would sign top prospects Jason Domínguez or Spencer Jones to a one-year deal, and New York’s farm system is currently thin behind those two.

The Brewers’ job isn’t to find the best candidate to replace Williams; It’s about finding the best package for him. But if New York is desperate enough for help to provide that package, getting him out of the National League makes perfect sense.
