There is good news and bad news

Nvidia unveiled four of its RTX 5000 series graphics cards at the CES event in Las Vegas and there’s good news and bad news when it comes to pricing. RTX 5090, 5080, 5070 Ti and 5070 pricing and availability have been announced. All four cards are available starting this month.

Nvidia RTX 5000 Launch: What Was Revealed?

How much does the RTX 5000 series cost?

When it comes to pricing, some cards are significantly more expensive, while others are cheaper compared to the original RTX 4000 series models. The RTX 5090 costs $400 more than the RTX 4090 at launch and retails for $1,999. However, the RTX 5080 costs $200 less than the RTX 4080 at launch, while the RTX 5070 Ti also has a launch price $50 lower than the RTX 4070 Ti. Finally, the RTX 5070 will cost $549, a $50 price cut.

That’s probably not what AMD and Intel wanted to hear, given their focus on the low- and mid-range, emphasizing value and controlling Nvidia’s enviable market share. Price cuts for models like the RTX 5070 compared to the RTX 4070 are likely to be a worst-case scenario, so the graphics card market will be very interesting in the next few months.

In short, if you want an RTX 5090, it will cost you more. Otherwise, you’ll pay less than the original RTX 4000 series. This is a far cry from recent rumors that suggested massive price increases, particularly for the RTX 5090 and 5080. Cards below the RTX 5070 have not been mentioned yet.

So what about the RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti?

The RTX 5060 TI and RTX 5060 are expected to launch at some point in the near future, but as I left the keynote to go to bed at 4am here in the UK, no information about these cards had been revealed. However, this is to be expected as it took a few months for the RTX 4060 and 4060 Ti to arrive after the initial launch of the RTX 4000 series with cards like the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080.

The good news about the RTX 5090

There’s more good news, though, as the card launched today was the Blackwell architecture-based RTX 5090, and the most obvious feature of the Founders Edition’s beautiful, sleek new cooler design is how small it is. The RTX 4090 (below) was a massive triple-slot graphics card and required significant clearance in PC cases. However, the RTX 5090 appears to be a full slot thinner and appears to have about two slots.

This likely means other models could be smaller, and also raises questions about what we thought we knew about other specs and power consumption, as none of the rumors even remotely suggested a dual-slot RTX 5090. The huge Inno3D model that was unveiled earlier this week is certainly a far cry from that. Partner cards are often larger, but the difference here is the depth of an entire slot, which is a huge difference. It will be interesting to see what other examples arrive from other board partners and whether some of them will also be dual-slot capable.
