Navigating in Fog: Safety Tips from the NWS

If a dense fog warning is issued for your area, it means widespread dense fog has formed and visibility may drop to a quarter mile or less. These conditions make travel challenging, so please take extra care on the road or consider postponing your trip if possible.

If driving through fog is unavoidable, consider the following safety guidelines:

Moderate your speed:

Slow down and allow extra travel time to reach your destination safely.

Visibility is important:

Make sure your vehicle is visible to others by using low beams that automatically activate your taillights. Use fog lights if your vehicle is equipped with them.

Avoid high beams:

Avoid using high beams as they cause glare and make it harder for you to see what is on the road ahead.

Keep your distance:

Maintain sufficient distance to accommodate sudden stops or changes in traffic.

Stay on your lane:

Use the road markings as a guide to stay in the right lane.

Visibility near zero:

In extremely dense fog and near zero visibility, it is best to first turn on your hazard lights, then simply drive to a safe location, such as a local business parking lot, and stop.

No parking:

If a designated parking space is not available, move your vehicle as far off the road as possible. Once you are stationary, turn off all lights except your hazard lights, apply the emergency brake, and release the brake pedal to make sure your taillights are not illuminated. This will reduce the risk of other drivers colliding with your stationary vehicle.
