This popular deal-finding extension hides the best deals from you

There’s a good chance you’ve heard of Honey, the browser extension that claims to offer the best deals when shopping online. However, recent accusations from a YouTuber claim that Honey doesn’t always find the best deal. Worst of all, it reportedly steals affiliate revenue from online content creators.

MegaLag claims that Honey is making bad deals and taking money from influencers

In a video from MegaLag, the YouTuber makes some strong claims about Honey’s practices. Firstly, they claim that Honey doesn’t always give you the best deal on the market. Sometimes no active offer is found or Honey-branded offers are suggested that may not save you the greatest amount of money.

For people who use Honey to save money, this sounds like a terrible realization. However, it’s even worse for people who rely on sponsored affiliate links, such as content creators. Some YouTubers and blog authors work with companies to create unique affiliate links for products. When you click on an affiliate link, the website knows whose link you clicked on and pays them a portion of the profits if you purchase something from them.

However, if you click on the affiliate link and visit Honey to find a discount on that product, MegaLag claims that the extension swaps the content creator’s referral cookie with PayPal’s. Worse, this happens even if Honey doesn’t find an offer. When you close the pop-up window informing you that no discounts were found, Honey will exchange the referral code.

So if you want to support the people who create the content you love, MegaLag recommends not using Honey if you click on their referral links. And if you’re looking to reduce the cost of your tech purchases but don’t want to use Honey, check out these ways to save money when building a new PC.
