Thomas Brown on Caleb Williams: “Shooters shoot, he definitely shoots”

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams set franchise and NFL records in his rookie season. The most disappointing result of the year, however, was four overall wins. Williams, the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was brought to Chicago to hopefully become the answer to a decades-long search for a long-term franchise quarterback.

One of the only bright spots in Chicago’s nine-game losing streak was the fact that Williams did not throw an interception in any of the nine straight losing games. Heading into Thursday night’s Week 17 game against the Seattle Seahawks, Williams has completed 326 pass attempts without throwing an interception, which is an NFL record for rookies and is not far behind Aaron Rodgers’ 402 attempts, which is tied for the lead NFL record books stands.

When asked about Williams continuing to drive the ball up the field, interim coach Thomas Brown praised the young freshman, calling him a shooter who shoots and wanting to give him the opportunity to make big plays in the passing game.

“Shooters shoot, he definitely shoots, which I really appreciate. We’re going to continue to give him opportunities to shoot,” Brown said of Williams. “Being able to understand the rhythm and timing of developing plays, but also just making the effort to go through a few different plays for practice, the better execution you’ll have.”

There were several encouraging signs for Williams in a rookie season that didn’t result in the team success that all teams were hoping for. Given the talent and potential he has shown at various times this season, developing Williams and working with the right coach will be crucial for the foreseeable future.
