Three indictments planned against suspects in Woodland Hills Clinic murder case

An indictment will be filed Monday against three people charged in connection with the shooting of a doctor outside his Woodland Hills clinic in what authorities are calling a murder-for-hire.

The victim’s ex-wife, Ahang Mirshojae, 53, of Calabasas, is charged along with Evan Hardman, 41, of Tomball, Texas; and Sarallah Jawed, 26, of Canoga Park, in the murder of her former husband, Dr. Hamid Mirshojae, 61, on August 23.

According to authorities, the victim was attacked on Aug. 23 while walking to his vehicle in the parking lot outside his clinic in the 5900 block of Topanga Canyon Boulevard, near Warner Center Park.

Ahang Mirshojae was arrested on December 12th. Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman subsequently alleged that the woman had hired a hitman to kill the victim for unspecified financial gain.

The murder charge against her includes charges of lying in wait and murder for financial gain in connection with the killing of her ex-husband, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. She also faces a criminal charge of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with an alleged attack with a baseball bat on her former husband on May 3.

The murder charge against Hardman includes charges of pecuniary murder and special circumstance ambush murder, as well as allegations that he personally and intentionally discharged a firearm and that he had multiple robbery convictions in Los Angeles County up to 2002, they say in the complaint.

The murder charge against Jawed includes an allegation of murder for financial gain due to special circumstances.

Hardman and Jawed, along with the doctor’s ex-wife, are also charged in the May 3 baseball bat attack.

According to the district attorney’s office, Jawed, who was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department’s fugitive unit on Dec. 11, allegedly drove Hardman out of the state a few days after the killing.

The three remain jailed without bail.

A fourth defendant, Ashley Rose Sweeting, 40, of Reseda, pleaded not guilty Dec. 12 to one count of accessory after the fact and also said she had a history of one or more serious or violent crimes been convicted of crimes.

Sweeting – who is accused of driving Hardman to and from the crime scene – remains in jail in lieu of $1 million bail.

She will be returned to a Los Angeles courtroom on February 5, where a date will be set for a hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence to take the case against her to trial.

At a news conference last month, the district attorney said Ahang Mirshojae was accused of “effectively hiring a hitman” – Hardman – to carry out the murder for financial gain. The prosecutor did not say how much money was involved or how much she allegedly paid to kill the victim.

“The horror and betrayal of this crime are indescribable, and it is with heavy hearts that we must also announce that charges have been filed against Dr. Hamid Mirshojae’s ex-wife Ahang Mirshojae was charged,” Hochman said. “The level of deception and violence in this case is appalling, and we will not rest until justice is served.”

Mirshojae’s ex-wife was taken into custody following a police raid on a sprawling mansion she is believed to have owned in the 5500 block of Newcastle Lane in Calabasas.

According to police, Hamid Mirshojae was walking to his vehicle in the parking lot of his medical clinic in Woodland Hills on August 23 around 5:30 p.m. As he approached the driver’s side of his vehicle, “a masked man emerged from hiding in the corner of the clinic and ran toward him,” a police statement said. “At close range, the suspect shot Dr. Mirshojae and then immediately fled back to the back of the clinic, away from the crime scene.”

Police said last month that they believe those arrested so far in the case “conspired to commit murder in the ambush and subsequent death of Dr. Mirshojae culminated”.
