Tigers are waiting for the meeting schedule

The Detroit Tigers are waiting for what could be the biggest news of the offseason.

It is the Japanese right-hander Roki Sasaki.

The Tigers have already submitted their materials and pitches to pursue Sasaki, a 23-year-old pitching phenom who was signed as an international free agent by the Chiba Lotte Marines on Dec. 10. However, the Tigers are not expecting a response from Sasaki’s agent Joel Wolfe until after the holidays about a possible in-person meeting that would take place after the holidays, probably in early January.

“We’re clear about getting feedback on meetings with them after the holidays,” Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said Friday after signing second baseman Gleyber Torres to a one-year, $15 million contract had contracted in US dollars. “We have not received a response yet, but we have submitted all of our materials and are waiting for a response.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the favorite to sign Sasaki, followed by the San Diego Padres.

The Tigers have a chance for a variety of reasons, but it would be a shock to the entire industry if Sasaki chose the Tigers. For the Tigers to compete in a tough battle, Sasaki must request a face-to-face meeting.

The Tigers are waiting for that.

Sasaki plans to be an ace from the start of his MLB career. During his four-year career in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, he owns a 2.02 ERA with 91 walks (5.6% walk rate) and 524 strikeouts (32.4% strikeout rate) over 414⅔ innings in 69 games.

Sasaki is an international free agent due to his age and experience, meaning he must sign a minor league contract, limiting what teams can pay him.

Because of this, Sasaki will cost between $5 million and $7 million in international bonus money. The Tigers have a chance to sign Sasaki along with the other 29 MLB teams as money will not be a deciding factor in his decision.
