Timothee Chalamet covers Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone”: Listen

With Bob Dylan’s seal of approval in his pocket and the release of A complete unknown In just a few weeks, Timothée Chalamet has released his complete version of two Dylan classics: “Girl From the North Country” and “Like a Rolling Stone.”

To be fair, snippets of both songs were featured in previously released trailers A complete unknownbut this is the first time the full recordings have been shared (they also follow Chalamet’s rendition of “Subterranean Homesick Blues”). Chalamet’s version of “Like a Rolling Stone” is rather abridged (about half the length of Dylan’s original), but still captures that loose, sneaky, wild energy.

And in Girl From the North Country, Chalamet is joined by his co-star Monica Barbaro, who plays Joan Baez in the film. Although Dylan is known to have recorded a version of this song with Johnny Cash, there is no evidence that Dylan and Baez ever sang it together. This was one of the loose fictionalizations A complete unknown Director James Mangold welcomed the retelling of this era in Dylan’s career.

“You can’t make it like a Wikipedia entry,” the filmmaker put it succinctly Rolling Stone in a recent cover story for the film. (Heck, even Dylan liked to be fast and loose with the facts. Edward Norton – who plays Pete Seeger – claimed that Dylan told Mangold to put a completely wrong moment in the film. When Mangold expressed concern about this, what people might think, Dylan reportedly replied, “Why do you care what other people think?”)

In this cover story, Chalamet talked about the preparation it took to play Dylan, saying that in addition to learning to play the guitar and harmonica, he also worked with vocal, dialect and movement coaches. The versions of the songs featured in the film were mostly recorded live on set.

“You tilt Recreate it in the studio,” Chalamet said. “When I sang along to a pre-recorded guitar, I could suddenly hear the lack of arm movement in my voice.”

A complete unknown is scheduled to open on Christmas Day.
