TMZ accuses ex-employee of embezzling $100,000

TMZ is suing a former executive in small claims court, accusing him of embezzling at least $99,509 from the company.

According to the lawsuit, Alex “Woody” Wood worked for the media company from January 2023 to February 2024. The lawsuit accuses him of “abusing his position of trust” by skimming money from petty cash.

“Wood is an embezzler and fraudster,” the lawsuit says.

A trial is scheduled to take place Monday morning at the Beverly Hills Courthouse.

Wood is also accused of paying for personal expenses with a company card and then lying to cover it up and funneling TMZ funds to companies he owned.

“After Wood was caught, he admitted his wrongdoing and promised to pay back the stolen money,” the lawsuit says.

He made a series of payments to TMZ from April to July but then stopped making them and still owes about $45,000, the lawsuit says.

The company says he “refused repeated requests” to pay the balance.

TMZ sued in small claims court on October 1.

Although the company says it owes him $45,000, the most it can recover for small claims is $6,250.

When reached for comment Friday, Wood hung up. On IMDb, he is credited as “executive producer” of last year’s TMZ Christmas special titled “TMZ’s Merry Elfin Christmas.”

WarnerMedia sold TMZ to Fox Corp in 2021 for about $50 million. Harvey Levin founded the company in 2005 after a long career as a law professor, legal commentator and television news reporter.
