Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday, so of course I gave you a puzzle to solve. Always an additional challenge on Wednesdays and then I share the answer every Thursday. Some of you messaged me with the solution, so bravo to you!

The puzzle was:

I follow the happy man in red,

But I bring fear and terror instead.

Before you get naughty, it’s best to think twice

I only knock if you weren’t nice.

Who am I?

The answer is Krampusthe somewhat demonic counterpart to Santa Claus. Hailing from Central Europe, Krampus is a horned nightmare creature who does the dirty business Santa Claus just can’t stand: punishing naughty children for their misdeeds.

With that in mind, let’s solve today’s Wordle!

That wasn’t a good word for me today, and I’m not sure if that was necessarily because it was a tricky word or if I just ran out of luck. Either way, hurrah.

I started with PLATE, got zero boxes, and left 346 possible solutions on the table. CHOIR gave me a yellow “I” and reduced the number to 27. If I had been a little smarter or a little more lucky, I would have guessed something better than MINUS for #3 (Wordle Bot says that FUNDS would have been “more efficient.” “) and then I decided on DYING, even though my gut feeling was only for VYING. Five tries and I finally did it!

I get -1 points for guessing five and -1 for losing to the bot that scored four today. -2 for me today. C’est la vie.

How to Play Competitive Wordle

• Guessing 1 is worth 3 points; guessing 2 is worth 2 points; guessing 3 is worth 1 point; guessing 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; Guessing on 6 is -2 points and missing the wordle is -3 points.
• If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If there is a tie you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or simply play for a new score every day.
• Fridays are 2XP, which means you double your points – positive or negative.
• You can keep a running list or just play day by day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle etymology

The word compete comes from the verb competewhich comes from Old French envious (means “to challenge or provoke”). This in turn comes from Latin invitewhich means “to invite or challenge.” The modern form compete emerged in the 16th century and compete is simply its present participle form and follows English conjugation patterns.
