Word analysis

Every day I look at Wordle Bot to analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

I almost made it in three, and I’ll explain how in a moment. CRIME wasn’t a very good start (it’s not worth it!), so I still had 463 possible solutions. SHOUT reduced the value to just 39, which is manageable but not great. At this point, I had an impulse to guess FUNKY, but I failed. There are so many words I can think of that have an “L” in them. So I went against my instincts and COMPLETELY advised. When the two boxes inhabited by traitorous Ls appeared gray, I had to stick with my original guess and sure enough, FUNKY was the word! Funky fresh!

Today’s Wordle etymology

The word funky has its origins in the early 17th century and is derived from the French word funqiuewhich means “smoke” or “musty smell” and refers to a strong or unpleasant smell. In early 20th century African American slang, the term evolved to describe something earthy or deeply rooted in authenticity, particularly in music such as jazz or funk, and eventually took on the modern meaning of something stylish, unconventional, or cool.
