Christmas puzzles

Santa Claus is standing in his workshop,

With presents piled high in the sky.

He calls for three wise elves,

To help with his care.

The first elf takes half of the pile,

Then three more gifts are added.

The second eleven takes half of the rest,

And adds the same as before.

The third elf does the same thing again,

Leaving Santa Claus with just one.

How many presents did Santa Claus have?

Before the elves began?

I’ll post the answer tomorrow, but feel free to contact me with your solution TwitterInstagram, Bluesky or Facebook.

I decided on a winter opening again today, but SNOWY wasn’t a good start for my Wordling this Christmas Day. Since there were 207 solutions left, I connected CRATE and reduced the number to just two. Impulsively, I guessed SPARE without even coming up with any other possible solution. Unfortunately that was Wordle SHARE. Well yes!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 0 points for guessing in four points and -1 for losing to the bot that only took three tries today. Sigh.

Today’s Wordle etymology

The word “Share” comes from Old English “scearu”which means “a section, division or part.” This is derived from Proto-Germanic “Skaro”which refers to something cut or separated. The root “sker-” means “to cut” or “to divide” in Proto-Indo-European. Over time, the meaning evolved to imply portions or allotments of something, as well as the concept of distributing or sharing something with others.
