Tommy Mellott shares emotional comments after national title game loss

Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott responded to the loss of the FCS national title without hesitation.

The Bobcats went a perfect 15-0 and went 13-2 against North Dakota State in the FCS national title game and had the privilege of leaving Frisco as national champions.

Things didn’t go according to plan. NDSU led 21-3 at halftime, and while Mellott pulled off some incredible heroics in the second half, the Bobcats still lost 35-32.

Mellott’s college career ended on the field Monday night in Frisco, and he felt the better team would go home with a loss. He also took a moment to acknowledge God in his postgame press conference.

“This year was something very special. Hats off to North Dakota State for beating us today. Unfortunately I think the better team lost, but that’s how it is sometimes. It’s football. That’s why they play the game. You know, we just did it.” “God is good in all circumstances and I trust that,” said a visibly dejected Mellott after the surprise defeat.

It’s a real shame that Mellott wasn’t able to end his historic FCS career with a national title. Montana State has had an insane run this season, but as the dual-threat QB said, the game is played for a reason.

A team can be the favorite and undefeated and still be upset. This is how sport works.

What’s perhaps most impressive is the fact that Mellott nearly rallied the Bobcats from an 18-point deficit.

He finished the game with three total touchdowns and 330 yards of offense. The team was just three points short of forcing OT and giving fans a legendary ending.

Mellott’s incredible run in Bozeman is finally over and it will be fascinating to see how he performs in the NFL. He is a real natural athlete. It’s hard to imagine him not having a serious career as the best player in the FCS. Hopefully he finds success at the next level. Let me know what you think [email protected].
