Toothless Tottenham are brought down by Bournemouth’s teenage defender Huijsen | Premier League

Teenage defender Dean Huijsen became Bournemouth’s youngest goalscorer in the Premier League as he led his side to victory over Tottenham at the Vitality Stadium.

Andoni Iraola’s Cherries had upset title contenders Arsenal and Manchester City in two of their last three games on home soil.

The Spanish U21 international, aged 19 years and 235 days, secured another setback for the club with his 17th-minute winner as inconsistent Spurs suffered another setback in what has been a mixed season so far.

Bournemouth pipped Ange Postecoglou’s visitors to ninth place after a deserved success that should have been more comfortable.

Ryan Christie hit the crossbar and the impressive hosts failed to capitalize on numerous chances while toothless Tottenham made little progress. Inconsistent Spurs beat champions Manchester City 4-0 in their last away game but that was their only win in five games in all competitions before the trip to Dorset.

Dominic Solanke was deemed fit for the game against his former club after missing Sunday’s 1-1 draw at home to Fulham through illness, with captain Son Heung-min making three changes to the bench. The north London club started on the up and after the recalled Dejan Kulusevski shot straight at goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, Solanke fired wastefully over the goal after being released by stand-in captain James Maddison. Bournemouth looked lively on the counter-attack and went forward.

Spurs goalkeeper Fraser Forster initially made a fine save to deny Evanilson after a hesitation from Radu Dragusin, but from the resulting corner from Marcus Tavernier, Huijsen, a summer signing from Juventus, arrived unmolested at the back post and nodded home.

Tavernier had the ball in the net 14 minutes after the opening but was clearly offside before later seeing a close-range header from Milos Kerkez’s cross saved by Forster. Despite Tottenham’s shortcomings, Postecoglou decided against changes at half-time.

His team were back in the lead but still looked vulnerable on the counter-attack, with Justin Kluivert scoring a penalty hat-trick in Saturday’s 4-2 win over Wolves to almost double Bournemouth’s lead.

Son replaced Pape Sarr in the 57th minute and immediately increased the tempo of Tottenham’s game. The South Korea international finished on the rebound from Kulusevski’s first attempt two minutes after coming on, but was denied by an offside flag before later sliding in for Maddison, who rolled narrowly wide.

Substitute Pedro Porro tested Kepa with a powerful low shot before Christie hit the left post at the other end.

Tottenham survived a major scare with 18 minutes left when Evanilson’s close-range finish was disallowed for offside after Forster’s risky pass to Kulusevski was intercepted.

Bournemouth should have decided the game over Spurs, with Tavernier and substitute Dango Ouattara each wasting excellent chances by firing over the goal. The missed shots provided plenty of tension in the six minutes of stoppage time, but ultimately played little role as Spurs failed to muster any meaningful attempt to grab a point.
