Tottenham 1-0 Liverpool: Lucas Bergvall is the leading lady of the young Spurs, who show remarkable maturity

Bergvall was the center of attention with a confident, elegant and lively performance – Liverpool would suggest too lively a performance in midfield.

This was a milestone for the young Swede, who was creative and competitive as he created most of the Spurs players’ chances – three from play – and also scored the winning goal.

Bergvall confidently beat Alisson four minutes from time and puts himself in illustrious company as, at 18 years and 341 days, he is the club’s youngest League Cup goalscorer since Gareth Bale, who was 18 years and 72 days old he scored against Middlesbrough in September 2007.

The £8.5m he paid Djurgarden in February 2024 – before loaning him back to the Swedish club for the rest of the season – already looks like a bargain. With a performance like this, only his fourth start for the club, it’s easy to see why Barcelona wanted to sign him too.

Equally notable was the story of Kinsky, who only received his work permit on Monday after arriving from Slavia Prague, but was thrown in straight away by Postecoglou, who is without the injured Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster, choosing the youngster ahead of Brandon Austin.

Kinsky showed remarkable confidence when he had the ball at his feet, completing a catch after some lovely juggling early on, always willing to take the positive option – although he got away in the first half when he slipped, when he tried to intercept Cody Gakpo’s routine shot.

And he responded superbly when Liverpool were tested as Liverpool finally applied pressure in the closing stages, running from his goal to block Darwin Nunez’s angled shot before pulling off his best save of the night and then Diving to the right to block the striker’s header in the final seconds.

It was a dream introduction, admittedly a risk from Postecoglou, but one that worked as the goalkeeper collapsed in tears into the arms of an admirer at the final whistle.
