Tottenham Hotspur – Roma 2-2: Spurs fail in the final seconds of the Europa League draw

Tottenham Hotspur dropped points. Roma tied the game in extra time and secured a point in the fifth game of the Europa League group stage on Thursday.

Against a struggling Roma team that hadn’t won away from home in eight months and hadn’t won a game since October 31, Spurs scored their first goal in the first five minutes.

After Heung-min Son was fouled on the left side of the pitch, he gained an advantage, the ball was played to the opposite side, where Pedro Porro shot the ball from deep into the middle of the penalty area, while Pape Sarr shot on the ball ran in. Sarr went 50/50 on the ball with Mats Hummels and got the first touch of the ball before being fouled by Hummels in the penalty area.

No penalty was initially awarded, but the head referee went to the monitor and denied that Sarr had touched the ball first before the foul and awarded Spurs a penalty. Son stepped up and scored his first penalty of the season, sending the Roma goalkeeper the wrong way.

Roma responded well to the early mishap as the Italian side equalized in the first 20 minutes through a free-kick header from Evan Ndicka. The free kick was awarded after Radu Dragusin pushed a Roma attacker as the two went for the ball.

Roma thought they had taken the lead with just two minutes remaining after Paulo Dybala and Stephan El Shaarawy scored on volleys. But El Shaarawy was just offside before his great goal.

Both teams struggled to retain possession at times and with Spurs needing to break Roma’s press, they did so with a great counterattack in the 34th minute.

Archie Gray recovered the ball well, led Sarr into the open field for a quick turn and sprayed the ball down the left flank, allowing Dejan Kulusevksi to run towards his preferred left foot and break through. Allowing the break to progress with Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson filling the flanks, Kulusevksi hit a low cross down the left for the onrushing Johnson to finish in front of the six and fire an open shot that beat the goalkeeper near the post .

Roma proved to be the better team in the second half and fought for the equalizer until the last second.

Roma had two chances to score through Artem Dovbyk, who was called back because the Ukrainian striker was offside when he assisted and was narrowly offside when he shot, which would have given Roma a 3-2 lead.

Spurs’ best chances came when Solanke missed a break in a 5v2 earlier, James Maddison missed (as the striker took a shot near the post) and the ball hit the post.

Roma equalized with a late goal in the 90+1 period from Hummels when the defense missed a corner and played into the box, allowing Hummels to sit back at the post and play a cross around the defense.

Spurs’ next game is on Sunday when they host Fulham. I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving and apologize for missing a lot of details. Enjoy the holiday
