Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou shares Liverpool’s frustration with the rules

Postecoglou has made it clear on several occasions since his Premier League tenure that he is unhappy with the way certain elements of modern football have developed.

During Wednesday’s game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decision was announced at the stadium for the first time in England after Dominic Solanke had a second-half goal ruled out for offside.

After the game, Postecoglou began a detailed criticism of football and its possible development.

He said: “I’m really surprised at how, whatever word I’m looking for, how people in this country so easily allow the game to change so much so quickly. It’s changed even more since VAR came in, since I’ve been more involved than in the last 50 years.

“We never debated offside, we never debated handballs, we never debated staying in the penalty area, we never debated so many things.”

“I mean, did everyone really like the announcement today? Did that really get you excited, you know, I mean, seriously, but now I am, and I understand, I understand it the way I understand it is what people want.

“I understand that. I understand that VAR will be there, technology will be a part of life, but it’s like with my wife and our children. We know about technology, but it limits screen time. Why? You know, slow it down, I think.

“We just have to constantly be careful – why do we want to change the game so much? And I know I’m going to be the old guy in the stands yelling ‘Boo’ every time, and I will be.” I’m the only one, but I just thought people would be a little more protective of the sanctity of the game .

“I talked about that. I didn’t criticize the referees, that wasn’t me. I never criticized, I didn’t think the decision was right, but that’s just how the game is, I think there’s a lot of confusion at the moment.

“I believe the game is changing based on technology and I say why isn’t anyone talking about this? Especially in this country where you feel in every way that you think yourselves.” As guardians of the game, you have a song that says, “It’s coming home,” that’s your game, and yet it needs it an Australian from the other side of the world to be the one most conservative about change.”
