Jonathan Wilson on Big Ange

Given his comments this week that football management is a tougher job than that of prime minister, it’s fair to say Ange Postecoglou is feeling the pressure. For him, it is not calculations that will significantly influence the lives of millions of people in the coming years; No, he has to find a way to get a result at home to Liverpool on Sunday. And yet, counterintuitively, it is Postecoglou who sticks to his principles.

“DARE IS TO LOVE”

Spurs fans protested against Daniel Levy and his friends before the game. Apparently the fans will also be releasing a lot of balloons in the 24th minute; Levy and ENIC have been with Spurs for 24 years.

Where does time go? It has already been 15 months since Luis Diaz’s goal, which was not scored against Spurs. Today Paul Tierney and Sian Massey-Ellis are on VAR duty.

Latest Premier League

  • Everton – Chelsea 0-0

  • Fulham 0-0 Southampton

  • Leicester 0-3 Wolves

Ineos’ decision to push Ruben Amorim to take the job mid-season rather than wait until next summer appears more short-sighted by the week.

Halftime results

In the Premier League there are four kick-off times at 2 p.m. This is how they do it.

  • Everton – Chelsea 0-0

  • Fulham 0-0 Southampton

  • Leicester 0-3 Wolves

  • Man Utd 0-1 Bournemouth

As things stand, Bournemouth are fifth in the table, ahead of Manchester City and in a different postcode to Manchester United. Andoni Iraola is the real deal, isn’t he?

“And it came to Molby…”

There is more than one way to win a title, as Liverpool showed in the 1970s and 1980s. They often set a rapid pace that no one could live with (1978-79, 1982-83 and 1987-88 come to mind, not to mention 2019-20). But there were also a few seasons where they started slowly and were written off, only to catch on like Terminator.

One such example was in 1985/86, when a dramatic victory in a televised game at Spurs was the catalyst for defeating champions Everton.

preamble

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the final Premier League game before Christmas, which may decide who will be top at Christmas. Liverpool return to Spurs, the scene of last season’s final VAR fiasco, knowing they will stay on top of Chelsea with a win*. Being top at Christmas doesn’t always mean the title, but it’s better than 13th place and would be an apt reflection of an almost unimaginably brilliant start under Arne Slot.

Meanwhile, Spurs are the Premier League’s answer to the Pakistan cricket team. Capricious in every detail, they use the sublime and the ridiculous as starting points from which to move further west and east. And they couldn’t get caught up in a boring game if they tried, which, by the way, they won’t. There have been 49 goals scored in Spurs’ 13 home games this season. For neutrals, this should be a lot of fun.

Start 4:30 p.m.

* This applies if Chelsea win at Everton at 2pm kick-off. If not, Liverpool will still be at the top.
