Travis Hunter Makes History, Wins Bednarik and Biletnikoff Awards; Ashton Jeanty wins Maxwell

Two-way star Travis Hunter of Colorado and running back Ashton Jeanty of Boise State tied for national player of the year honors, and Hunter made history by picking up honors on both sides of the ball at Thursday night’s college football awards ceremony took home.

Jeanty won the Maxwell Award for the most outstanding player in football, while Hunter was named the Walter Camp Player of the Year. Both players are finalists for the Heisman Trophy, which will be awarded Saturday night.

Additionally, Hunter won both the Bednarik Award as the best defensive player and the Biletnikoff Award as the best wide receiver, an unprecedented achievement. (He was not a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award for best defensive back.) Jeanty also won the Doak Walker Award as the country’s best running back.

Former Michigan cornerback Charles Woodson is the only defensive player to win the Heisman in 1997, but Hunter could become the second on Saturday. Woodson won the Bednarik in 1997, as did Hunter this year, and Woodson also won the Thorpe, which Hunter failed to do. But Woodson didn’t receive offensive accolades like Hunter did on Thursday.
