Trevor Lawrence was injured on an ugly hit by Azeez Al-Shaair that sparked a brawl between the Jaguars and Texans

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was sent off Sunday after he was left lying on the field at EverBank Stadium following a dirty hit from Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair.

The hit sparked a brawl between the teams and led to the ejection of Al-Shaair and Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones in the Texans’ 23-20 win. Jaguars tight end Evan Engram was also penalized for unnecessary roughness for his role in the ensuing fight.

Lawrence eventually left the field sitting upright on a cart. He was was ejected from the game shortly afterwards with a head injury. Backup Mac Jones took over at quarterback.

The goal came in the second quarter when Houston had a 6-0 lead. Lawrence climbed to second and seventh near midfield and slid near the gain line. When Lawrence slipped, Al-Shair dove headfirst and came into direct contact with Lawrence’s torso.

A flag was immediately thrown. Al-Shair’s first reaction was to protest the punishment before he was immediately met by Engram. A brawl broke out and spilled onto the Jaguars sideline.

Al-Shaair and two of his teammates were surrounded by jaguars before officials finally brought the melee under control. Before the fight ended, Lawrence was left lying face up on the field. He was eventually able to stand up before leaving the field on a cart.

After the initial fight was settled, Jaguars guard Brandon Scherff approached Al-Shaair and another scuffle ensued. After the ejections, Al-Shaair was escorted off the field by a police officer, several Texas staff members and his teammate Will Anderson Jr. As he approached the tunnel, Al-Shaair was surrounded by fans.

According to the CBS broadcast, fans threw objects at Al-Shair as he left the field. The game then resumed with Jones at quarterback for Jacksonville.

Jacksonville fell behind 23-6, but Jones threw two touchdown passes to Parker Washington and Brian Thomas Jr. in the fourth quarter before Texas running back Joe Mixon converted a third down and Houston ran out of time.

Jones finished 20 of 32 for 235 yards and the two touchdowns in relief of Lawrence, while Washington had six catches for 103 yards. Texas quarterback CJ Stroud completed 22 of 34 for 242 yards and a touchdown, Mixon rushed 20 times for 101 yards and a touchdown and Nico Collins caught eight passes for 119 yards.

Lawrence tweeted Sunday night that he was home and “feeling better.”

After the game, Jaguars safety Andrew Wingard spoke about the team’s unity and applauded Jones for standing by Lawrence in the melee following the goal.

“That’s our brother,” Wingard said of Lawrence. “We stand up for each other. It’s not a team – we’re not going to fall apart, and you’ve seen it. Jarrion was thrown out. He’s a rookie out there throwing shots.”

“Honestly, that’s nice to see. You hate it because of its wallet. But that’s the type of team we have.”

Engram called it a “dirty hit.”

“Trev went down,” Engram said. “I saw it from my periphery, I had a pretty clear view of it. In that moment, it felt instinctive – it just didn’t feel like a clean hit, so I just go for my quarterback. …

“I just knew it was wrong. Because it’s a dirty game. You stand up for your boys. That’s how it works.”

In the Texans’ locker room, quarterback CJ Stroud defended Al-Shaair and sent well wishes to Lawrence.

“I really hope and pray that he’s OK,” Stroud said of Lawrence. “Prayers to his family too. I still rock with Azeez. I don’t think that was his intention.”

“I pray Trevor is okay.”

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson called the hit “a play that has no place in our league.”
