Trio of atmospheric river storms dumping rain and snow in the west

A series of three atmospheric river storms have already begun bringing amounts of rain and mountain snow to the West Coast, particularly in Northern California, through Monday.

The first atmospheric river moved in Wednesday evening and brought rain and mountain snow to northern and central California on Thursday. Up to 4 inches fell in Northern California, less in the South.

The second and strongest atmospheric river in the group will move into the West Coast later Friday and last through Saturday, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

This storm will potentially produce heavy rain and snow at higher elevations in locations along the central and northern west coast.

Several centimeters of rain are expected, especially in Northern California. This is notable because the heaviest rain will fall on the same areas that were drenched with up to 23 inches of rain during the Category 5 atmospheric river in November 2023, the FOX Forecast Center noted.

Flood warnings are in effect for the risk of minor flooding in cities and small streams.

There will be more snow with this second system and several periods of heavy snowfall are expected.

In the Sierra Nevada, up to 2 feet could fall above 5,000 feet, with 3 to 5 feet closer to the peaks. The heaviest snowfall is expected during Saturday. Snow-covered roads, chain checks and travel delays are likely to make travel very difficult at times.

Gusty winds of up to 55 mph are also expected over mountain ridges, which along with heavy snowfall may cause whiteout conditions at times.

The third and much weaker atmospheric river will move in on Monday. Further flooding risks are not expected, but additional snow could slow mountain travel again.
