Trump appoints Peter Navarro and Charles Kusner to join government

President-elect Donald Trump has tapped fellow convicted criminal Peter Navarro as his senior adviser on trade and manufacturing.

“I am pleased to announce that Peter Navarro, a man who has been treated horribly by the Deep State, or whatever you want to call it, will serve as my senior adviser on trade and manufacturing,” Trump wrote Truth Social, emphasizing that in his first term, Navarro helped him “renegotiate unfair trade agreements like NAFTA and the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS), and FAST implemented every one of my tariff and trade measures.”

In a separate post, Trump wrote that “the senior counselor position leverages Peter’s extensive White House experience while leveraging his extensive political analysis and media skills.” Navarro is a frequent guest on Fox News, Trump’s most popular propaganda channel. “His job will be to help successfully advance and communicate Trump’s manufacturing, tariffs and trade agendas.”

Navarro would be the second convicted criminal chosen to serve in Trump’s new administration. On Tuesday, the president-elect announced that he had chosen Charles Kusher — the father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner — to be U.S. ambassador to France. In 2005, Kushner Sr. was convicted of illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion and witness tampering and sentenced to two years in prison. A generous donor to Trump’s 2016 campaign, he was pardoned by Trump in 2020.

In January, Navarro was sentenced to four months in prison after being convicted of contempt of Congress for ignoring two congressional subpoenas for testimony and documents related to Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Navarro called the case against him an act of “terrorism” and compared his arrest to what is happening in “Stalinist Russia.”

As already reported by Rolling Stone, Trump told close advisers earlier this year that he planned to reward Navarro for taking the fall and ending up in prison rather than turning into a “rat.”

“We’ll take care of him,” a source reported Trump saying about the man he privately referred to as “my Peter.”

Trump has also reportedly suggested granting Navarro federal clemency once he wins the White House and returns to power. A Republican source told Rolling Stone that the president-elect once joked that even if they waterboarded Navarro, he would never “betray” him.

Now that Navarro has been released, Trump is making good on his promises and sending another loyalist to the highest ranks of his administration.
