Trump becomes Purdue’s defensive ends coach

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue football head coach Barry Odom has announced that Jake Trump will serve as the Boilermakers’ defensive ends coach as part of his new staff. Trump arrives in West Lafayette after a five-year stay in Arkansas.

“Jake’s experiences will be extremely valuable to the development of our program,” Odom said. “He has worked his way up the coaching profession and continues to make an impact every step of the way. His ability to recruit players, network and coach his group will be of great benefit to our team. Jake understands our defensive philosophy by helping to build it over the years as a player and as a coach.

Trump spent the last five seasons at Arkansas as a defensive quality control, including three seasons when Odom was the Razorbacks’ defensive coordinator. Arkansas’ defense had 12 All-SEC honorees during his time in Fayetteville.

Arkansas’ rush defense improved with Trump on staff, allowing just 121.8 yards per game last season, which ranked them seventh in the SEC and 32nd nationally. Last year, Trump helped a Razorback defensive unit allow just 357.2 yards per game, the team’s lowest total since 2014. The 2023 Hogs also ranked fourth in the SEC in pass defense, allowing just 202.8 yards per game up through the air.

During the 2021 season, Trump helped Arkansas finish sixth in the SEC in points allowed per game (22.9) and pass yards allowed per game (214.2). In the defensive ends room, Tre Williams led the entire Razorback team with six sacks.

Before making the jump to Arkansas, Trump served as a defensive assistant in Nevada during the abbreviated 2020 campaign.

Trump played under Odom at Missouri (2015-18) before joining the team after graduation to further his coaching career (2019). His playing career was highlighted by him appearing in all 13 games during the 2018 season. Trump was a standout student in the classroom and landed on the SEC Academic Honor Roll four years in a row.

Trump graduated from Missouri in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics and agricultural systems management.
