Trump is urging the GOP to reject a funding bill that would prevent a government shutdown

Lisa Desjardins:

We talked about déjà vu last night, but I want to tell you that today was extraordinary. And there is a lot at stake here. This bill is now really on the brink.

In fact, it’s pretty safe to say that this bill will fail and be taken off the table by Republicans. Now I would like to explain a little why. There are a variety of issues that Republicans don’t like in this. The fact that the money for disaster relief is not paid is one. That it would include some cost of living increases for members of Congress. It would also exempt members of Congress from Obamacare.

There is also money for seasonal and migrant workers who are here legally, but some Republicans don’t like that. But overall there is a process problem here. They say they weren’t consulted, they didn’t have enough time.

So I’m going to show you what happened today from members of Congress across a broad spectrum of membership. If you look at this, Chip Roy, Republican, well-known conservative, wrote, “Vote No.”

Nicole Malliotakis from New York: “I will vote no.” She is more moderate. Then we have Representative Golden of Maine. He will vote against it. He is a Democrat. So almost the entire spectrum here says they have a problem with this bill.

For Speaker Mike Johnson, it’s a political disaster. And another factor is that Trump is speaking out. But that happened after a major figure in Trump world, Elon Musk, tweeted that he was against it. So what we’re seeing here is a problem for Mike Johnson, but also a question of who’s really in charge here, not just for the Republicans, but for the government itself?
