Republicans and allies of President-elect Donald Trump expressed anger at outgoing US President Joe Biden, who awarded the Medal of Freedom to businessman and philanthropist George Soros on Sunday.

George Soros was among 18 others honored with the nation’s highest civilian honor by President Joe Biden before Donald Trump’s term began. Other honorees included Hillary Clinton, footballer Lionel Messi, U2 frontman Bono and actor Denzel Washington.

The award was accepted on behalf of George Soros by his son Alex Soros. A White House statement said Soros’ philanthropic organization, the Open Society Foundation, “supported global initiatives that strengthen democracy, human rights, education and social justice.”

Soros wasn’t the only controversial winner; Democrat Hillary Clinton also faced backlash.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk also called Soros the award “a travesty.” A user shared a clip of Musk previously expressing his opinion about George Soros on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

In the clip shared by the user, Musk claims: “(George Soros) fundamentally hates humanity. “He does things that undermine the fabric of civilization.”
