Trump Jr. visits Greenland after his father said the U.S. should own the territory

Donald Trump Jr. is planning a visit to Greenland, two weeks after his father reiterated his desire for the U.S. to take control of the autonomous Danish territory.

The son of the elected US president plans to record video material for a podcast during the one-day private visit, US media report.

Donald Trump sparked controversy again in December when he said “ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” for U.S. national security.

He had already expressed interest in purchasing the Arctic island during his first term as president. Both times, Trump was rebuffed by Greenland’s leadership.

“We are not for sale and will not be for sale,” the island’s prime minister, Mute Egede, said in December. “Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland.”

President-elect Trump confirmed his son’s trip on his social media platform Truth Social on Monday.

He said Don Jr. and “various representatives” would travel to Greenland “to visit some of the greatest areas and sights.”

Trump added that Greenland and its people “will benefit tremendously if and when it becomes part of our nation.”

“We will protect and value it from a very vicious outside world,” he said. “Make Greenland great again!”

The president-elect’s post also included a video in which an unnamed Greenlander – wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat – calls on Trump to buy Greenland and free it from “colonization” by Denmark.

The identity of the man in the clip is unclear.

Greenland is on the shortest route from North America to Europe and is therefore of strategic importance for the USA. It is also home to a major American space facility.

The president-elect’s eldest son played a key role in the 2024 US election campaign, appearing frequently at rallies and in the media.

However, according to the Danish Foreign Ministry, he will not travel to Greenland on behalf of his father’s new government.

“We have noted Donald Trump Jr.’s planned visit to Greenland. As this is not an official American visit, the Danish Foreign Ministry has made no further comment on the visit,” the ministry told BBC News.

Hours after President-elect Trump’s latest intervention, the Danish government announced a huge increase in defense spending for Greenland. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the timing of the announcement as an “irony of fate.”

On Monday, Denmark’s King Frederik X changed the royal coat of arms to more prominently feature depictions of Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Some saw it as a rebuke to Trump, but it could also prove controversial among Greenland’s separatist movement.

King Frederik used his New Year’s address to say that the Kingdom of Denmark was united “all the way to Greenland,” adding: “We belong together.”

But Greenland’s prime minister used his own New Year’s address to push for independence from Denmark, saying the island must free itself from “the shackles of colonialism.”

Trump is not the first US president to propose purchasing Greenland. The idea was first put forward in the 1860s by the country’s 17th president, Andrew Johnson.

Regardless, Trump has done this in recent weeks threatened to regain control of the Panama Canalone of the most important waterways in the world. He accused Panama of charging excessive fees for access.

Panama’s president responded that “every square meter” of the canal and surrounding areas belonged to his country.
